Measure reading speed with a timed passage

Choose Timed passage, start when you begin the first word, read the complete passage normally, and finish after the last word. The calculator uses the passage's engine-verified word count and the measured elapsed . Manual mode answers the same question when you already have a word count and time.

Example: 925 words in 4 minutes 30 seconds

  1. Convert 4 30 to 270 .
  2. The engine calculates 925 ÷ 270 × 60 = 205.6 after one-decimal display rounding.

Calculate words per minute from words and elapsed seconds

is a rate. Convert the complete elapsed time to , divide the words read by that total, then multiply by 60 /min. Timed and manual modes use this same server-side equation; only the source of the word count and elapsed time changes.

Repeat the test under comparable conditions

A useful personal baseline comes from comparable runs. Keep the language, text type, device, reading purpose, and interruption level similar, and test more than once when the result will guide planning. A difficult technical passage and familiar narrative prose can produce different rates without either result being an error.

WPM does not measure comprehension or reading ability

A result such as 400 reports only words divided by time for that run. It does not show what the reader understood or retained, and it should not be assigned a universal fast, slow, or ability label without comparable task and comprehension evidence. Brysbaert's meta-analysis likewise separates reading-rate findings by language and material rather than treating one number as a universal standard.
