Playback speed is a multiplier of the recording's normal rate. Convert the original duration to one base unit, divide by the multiplier, and format the result back into hours, minutes, and . The formula accepts a positive multiplier, but each app controls the rates it actually offers.
Example: a 9-hour audiobook at 1.5×

Time saved above 1× and time added below 1×
Time saved is original duration minus adjusted duration. An 8 hr audiobook at 1.75× takes 4 34 17 after nearest- display rounding, so it saves 3 25 43 . Below 1×, the adjusted duration is longer and the calculator labels the difference as time added.
Solve for the playback speed needed by a deadline
Target-time mode reverses the equation. Divide original duration by the time available. Fitting 10 hr into 5 hr requires 2× playback. This is a mathematical requirement, not a guarantee that the app offers the rate or that it suits the listener.
Pauses, rewinds, and app features can change real finish time
The result assumes continuous playback. Pauses, chapter navigation, rewinds, ads, downloaded-edition differences, and automatic silence removal can change real elapsed time. The same duration-by-rate calculation works for a podcast or lecture recording when its original duration is known. Platform controls also vary: Apple Books on Mac documents choices from 0.75× to 2×, while Libby documents custom speeds from 0.6× to 3×. Confirm the available control in the app you use.
