Calculate wallpaper rolls from full-height drops
The roll count comes from complete full-height drops, not raw roll area. The calculator finds how many full-width drops the wall needs, adjusts each cut for trim and pattern matching, finds the complete drops that fit on one roll, and rounds the purchase up to whole rolls.

The Wallcoverings Association uses 4 total, about 2 at each end. Spoonflower's long-roll method uses 5 . Replace the editable default with the selected product or installer's instruction; the engine adds no separate waste percentage.
Example: a 10 by 10 foot wall with straight-match paper
- Enter a 10 ft wall width, 10 ft wall height, 20.5 in roll width, 11 yd roll length, 21 in straight repeat, and 4 in total trim.
- The engine needs 6 full drops.
- Repeat rounding makes each drop 10.5 ft, and the roll yields 3 complete drops.
- The final answer is 2 rolls.
- The wall area shown for context is 100 sq ft.
How pattern repeat changes each drop
A random match uses the wall height plus trim. A straight match rounds that base cut up to the next full vertical repeat. For a half-drop match, this calculator rounds up to the smallest odd number of half repeats. That conservative sequential-cut model makes one cut finish on the opposite A/B phase from the next. The Wallcoverings Association defines the match types, and the archived Lewis & Wood measuring guide documents half-repeat rounding and a grouped odd/even cutting alternative. This calculator does not optimize that grouped method, so follow the product label or installer when it specifies a different cut plan.
For a 4 m wide by 2.4 m high wall, enter a 52 cm wide by 10 m long roll, a 64 cm half-drop repeat, and 10.16 cm total trim. The engine needs 8 drops, adjusts each drop to 2.88 m, fits 3 drops per roll, and returns 3 rolls.
Why doors and windows do not always reduce the roll count
Authoritative instructions disagree. The Wallcoverings Association estimating guide subtracts opening area in its square-foot method, while Spoonflower's ordering guide says to include doors and windows in the measured wall. This engine makes no automatic deduction because opening area alone does not identify which complete full-width drops can be saved. For a large or position-sensitive opening, calculate the wall sections separately or ask the installer to review the cut layout.
Check package dimensions and the print lot before ordering
Use the physical width and length printed for the package you will buy. Single-roll, double-roll, and bolt labels do not provide a universal conversion. The result is the calculated minimum: it includes the entered trim and pattern-matching cut length but no separate spare-material reserve. Reserve guidance varies by product and supplier, so check the label or installer before ordering. James Dunlop Textiles publishes product-specific extra-material guidance, while the archived Lewis & Wood guide recommends extra full drops rather than a universal percentage. The Wallcoverings Association installation guide tells installers to compare roll tickets and lot numbers, and Spoonflower warns that separate orders can have color variation. Order the complete job together and confirm a matching print or dye lot. Optional cost is material price only; it excludes paste, delivery, tax, and labor.
Where the roll estimate stops
Combine wall widths only when every drop uses the same decorated height. Calculate different heights separately to inspect each roll yield, then confirm with the product instructions or installer whether pattern alignment requires a common tallest-wall cut length. The engine supports random, straight, and half-drop matches; multiple-drop, quarter-drop, and other phase systems need a product-specific cut plan. For peel-and-stick wallpaper, use this calculator only for a continuous rectangular roll with known physical width and length. Fixed panels, numbered murals, arches, stairs, slopes, and irregular walls need the manufacturer's layout or an installer-developed cut plan. The calculator does not optimize grouped half-drop cuts or leftover cuts across wall groups, calculate paste or labor, or size digital wallpaper for a phone or computer screen.
