Calculate surface area and individual tile quantity
Add the rectangles that will receive tile, or enter a known total. The calculator normalizes surface and tile units, divides the tileable area by one tile's face area, and rounds up to whole pieces. Calculator Campus uses the entered values only for this calculation and does not retain them.
Treat separate walls, floors, or backsplash runs as separate rows and add only the areas that receive tile.

Enter actual box coverage when you need whole boxes; the calculator assumes no universal package size.
Example: 12-inch tiles for a 10-by-10-foot floor
- A 10 × 10 floor covers 100 sq ft.
- A 12 × 12 tile covers 1 sq ft, so the base count is 100 tiles.
- The visible 10% allowance adds 10 tiles for a 110-tile plan.
- At 10 per box, the result is exactly 11 boxes.
Add extra tile for cuts, breakage, and layout
The correct allowance depends on surface shape, cuts, pattern, breakage, batch matching, and reserve. MSI gives a 10% general example and 10% to 15% reserve guidance, with an additional 20% for a diagonal pattern. These are planning examples, not guarantees. The calculator starts visibly at 10% and lets you replace it with the value appropriate to the project and product guidance.
Convert planned tile to whole boxes
The engine shows a base whole-piece count for the measured area, then applies the allowance to measured area before rounding the planned piece count. Box count is a separate ceiling based on planned tile coverage and the coverage printed on the box. Purchased coverage can exceed planned coverage, so the result also shows coverage beyond the plan. Do not infer a box size from tile dimensions alone.
Use separate rectangles for walls, floors, backsplashes, and showers
The same area-to-piece formula works for a floor, wall, backsplash, or shower when each tileable section is entered as a rectangle. Split complex surfaces into smaller rectangles and omit openings by entering only the covered sections. This tool estimates quantity; it does not place seams, center a pattern, calculate grout or mortar, or generate an exact cut map.
