Calculate flooring area before allowance
Add the rectangles that will receive packaged flooring, or enter a known total from a plan. Subtract only fixed footprints that truly will not be covered. The calculator normalizes imperial and metric entries before applying the allowance. Calculator Campus uses the entered values only for this calculation and does not retain them.
Add closets and connected rooms only when the same flooring will cover them.

Measured, planned, purchased, handled, and labor-billed area can be different quantities.
Example: whole packages for a 12-by-12-foot room
- A 12 × 12 room measures 144 sq ft.
- With 10% extra, the engine plans 158.4 sq ft.
- At 23.64 per package, it rounds 6.70 up to 7 packages, which cover 165.48 sq ft and leave 7.08 sq ft beyond the plan.
Choose an extra-material allowance for the layout
There is no single allowance for every room and product. Pergo describes about 5% extra for a standard room and up to 10% for a tricky or small room. MSI gives about 10% for regular vinyl-plank layouts and roughly 15% for diagonal or herringbone examples. The calculator starts visibly at 10%; replace it with the rate appropriate to the product instructions, room shape, layout, and repair-stock plan.
Round planned coverage up to whole packages
Planned coverage includes the selected allowance. Package count is a step: divide by the coverage printed on the selected package and round up. Purchased coverage can therefore exceed the plan. The difference is shown as coverage beyond the plan, which may become offcuts or repair stock rather than usable full-area material.
Estimate material cost from the package price
When a package price is entered, the engine multiplies it by the whole-package count. For the worked example, 7 × 42.99 = 300.93. This is material price only; it excludes tax, delivery, removal, subfloor work, underlayment, trim, transitions, fasteners, and installation labor.
Material coverage is not the same as installer-billed area
A quote may distinguish net floor area, material handled, full packages purchased, removal area, and labor scope. Use this result to audit the material arithmetic, then ask the installer which quantity and tasks each quote line uses.
