Use this split bill calculator to divide one receipt into equal shares or shares based on each person’s order, with tax, tip and penny reconciliation.
Split a receipt into personal shares
Start with the receipt subtotal before separately entered tax, tip and other charges. Equal shares divides the final total among the entered number of people. By each person’s order uses their individual subtotals as the weights for shared discounts and charges. Split a shared dish between the relevant people before entering those subtotals. Amounts use US dollars and cents. Enter money with at most two decimal places. The additional-tip rate is editable, including zero. Its visible default is an example, not a recommendation. The CFPB teaching worksheet illustrates multiplying a bill by a selected percentage; the group chooses that percentage and the split agreement.
Use the subtotal before the tax and other charges you enter separately. An already included gratuity belongs in Other included charges, while Additional tip is only what you intend to add.
Equal shares divides the final receipt. By order uses personal subtotals for proportional shared charges; pre-divide shared dishes among the relevant people before entering them.
Equal and by-order split example
For the Equal meal preset, enter a 80.00 subtotal, 4 people and an additional 20% tip. Leave tax, discount and other charges at zero, and use the original subtotal before tax as the tip basis. The engine gives 16.00 additional tip, 96.00 total and 24.00 per person.
For Different orders, Alex’s subtotal is 30.00 and Sam’s is 70.00. Add 8.00 tax and an additional 20% tip on the original subtotal before tax, with no discount or other charges. The total is 128.00. Alex pays 38.40 and Sam pays 89.60, in proportion to their order subtotals.
How tax, discounts and included charges affect the split
Open More options when the receipt has adjustments. A printed tax amount is usually the most direct input. If you enter a tax percentage, this calculator applies it to the subtotal minus the entered discount. It supplies no tax rate and does not determine which items are taxable.
Choose the additional-tip base explicitly. Subtotal before tax excludes tax; Subtotal plus tax includes it. A separate control chooses the original or discounted subtotal. Other charges are excluded from either tip base. A discount cannot exceed the subtotal.
Put an already included gratuity or another receipt fee in Other included charges to add, and enter only the additional tip you intend to add. This separates the printed charge from the voluntary addition. It does not determine whether a fee is distributed to staff. Do not enter a charge twice or infer an employment benefit from the word gratuity.
If you only need a tip amount and a quick equal-share estimate, Tip Calculator keeps that shorter receipt task together. Percentage Calculator handles general percentage arithmetic outside a receipt.
How the last pennies are assigned
The engine first rounds each percentage charge half up to a cent. Equal shares divides the final total in whole cents and assigns leftover cents to earlier people. A 100.00 total with 3 people and no added charges becomes 33.34, 33.33 and 33.33.
By-order mode allocates each shared adjustment proportionally. It takes the whole-cent portion, then assigns remaining cents to the largest fractional remainders, breaking ties by input order. The allocated discount is subtracted and the allocated tax, additional tip and other charges are added. Every displayed share adds back to the receipt total. Small component adjustments can make the shares differ slightly from rounding the final proportional total in a single step.
This is the calculator’s declared rounding policy, not a rule about who ought to pay. Agree on the split before collecting money. This page allocates one receipt; it does not record payments, scan receipts or maintain a shared account.
For costs paid by different people across several receipts, Split Expenses Calculator includes nonpayers and selected expense participants, then shows who reimburses whom.
