How to use the GPA to percentage calculator
Use this when a form asks for a percentage but your record gives only a GPA. Enter the GPA as reported, then choose the maximum for its scale. This one-way calculator estimates GPA to percentage; it does not convert a percentage back to GPA.
Some weighted systems use 4.0 for regular classes and reserve 5.0 for advanced classes. In those mixed systems, dividing every GPA by 5.0 can make regular-course grades look too low.
A GPA is an average on a grading scale. It does not preserve the individual percentage marks used to produce it.
If an application, university, or credential evaluator publishes a conversion, use that rule instead of this general estimate.
Example: 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale
- For a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale, the calculator evaluates 3.5 ÷ 4 × 100 and returns 87.5%.
- The result is one proportional estimate, rounded to at most two decimal places.
How the proportional estimate is calculated
The formula is percentage = GPA ÷ scale maximum × 100. The scale maximum is the denominator, so it must match the scale printed with the GPA. An 8.2 GPA with the generic 10.0 scale option, for example, gives 82%. Choose Other scale when the maximum printed with the GPA is not listed.
Why an official GPA conversion may differ
GPA policies vary in grade cutoffs, course weighting, and conversion formulas. Some 10-point policies use a fixed multiplier instead of dividing by the scale maximum. For example, IIM Mumbai tells applicants to use their board or institution's certified equivalence first and applies CGPA × 9.5 only when none is available. Follow the rule for the form you are completing.
