A cumulative GPA calculator combines several terms — or several schools — into one grade point average on the 4.0 scale. It is a credit-weighted roll-up of your term GPAs (total quality points divided by total credit hours), not the plain average of your semester GPAs, and when you combine term GPAs it shows that plain average next to the credit-weighted number so you can see the gap. Choose what you are starting with: combine the term GPAs you already have, or add this term's individual course grades to a prior cumulative GPA. The course-entry model inherits the plus/minus scale and the A+ 4.0-vs-4.3 toggle; credits are free text; and multiple institutions combine as labelled rows — keep every row's credit hours on one consistent basis, because the tool does not convert between quarter and semester credits.
How your cumulative GPA is calculated (and why it is not an average of averages)
Your cumulative GPA is a credit-weighted roll-up of your term GPAs — total quality points divided by total credit hours across every term — not the plain average of your semester GPAs. This guide shows how the credit-weighting works, why the average of your term GPAs is usually the wrong number, how to combine terms and multiple schools honestly, what counts as a good cumulative GPA, and which of the neighboring GPA and grade tools you actually need.
Each term contributes its GPA times its credit hours (its quality points); add those up and divide by the total credit hours. A term with more credits pulls the cumulative harder than a light term.
When every term carries the same credits the credit-weighted cumulative and the plain average of your term GPAs match exactly; when credit loads differ, they diverge and the credit-weighted number is the real answer.
The tool does not convert between quarter and semester credits, so combine only terms measured the same way.
Example: two years, and why it is not 3.40
Take Year 1 at a 3.60 GPA over 30 credits and Year 2 at a 3.20 over 15 credits. The quality points are 3.60 times 30 plus 3.20 times 15, which is 108 plus 48, or 156, over 45 credit hours — a 3.47 cumulative GPA. A plain average of the two term GPAs would be 3.40, but that ignores the credits: Year 1 counts for twice as many hours as Year 2, so the cumulative is pulled toward the stronger, heavier year. The tool shows both numbers side by side so the gap is visible.
How the credit-weighted roll-up works
Every term earns quality points equal to its GPA times its credit hours. Your cumulative GPA is the sum of those quality points divided by the sum of the credit hours. That is why the tool shows the total quality points and the credits counted next to the cumulative GPA — they are the numerator and denominator behind the one big number. In the two-year example above, 156 quality points over 45 credits gives 3.47.
The course-entry model applies the same credit-weighting one level down. This term's course grades become quality points (each grade's points times its credits), which give this term's GPA; that GPA and its credits are then merged into your prior cumulative exactly like any other term. A prior 3.20 over 30 credits, plus this term's A (3 credits), B (3 credits), and A- (4 credits), gives a 3.58 for the term and an updated 3.30 cumulative — the prior 3.20 nudged upward by the stronger new term. Leave the prior fields blank and the same model just returns this term's GPA on its own.
Why it is not the average of your semester GPAs
The most common cumulative-GPA mistake is averaging your semester GPAs directly. That only works when every term carries the same credits. Consider a 4.0 earned over 3 credits and a 2.0 earned over 15 credits: averaging the two GPAs suggests a 3.00, but the real cumulative is 4.0 times 3 plus 2.0 times 15, which is 42 quality points over 18 credits, or 2.33 — far below 3.00, because the 2.0 term carries five times the credit weight. The tool shows the plain average of your term GPAs right next to the credit-weighted cumulative so you can see this gap for your own numbers.
The two numbers are not always different, and the tool is honest about that. When your terms carry equal credits — say a 3.00 over 12 credits and a 4.00 over 12 credits — the credit-weighted cumulative (3.50) and the plain average (3.50) are identical, because equal weights make the weighted average a plain average. The gap only appears when your credit loads differ, which is exactly when averaging your semester GPAs goes wrong.
Combining terms, courses, and multiple schools
Pick the model that matches what you already have. If you have each term's GPA and credit hours, use the term model and enter one row per term. If instead you have a prior cumulative GPA and this term's individual course grades, use the course model — it computes this term's GPA from the grades (on the plus/minus or whole-letter scale, with the A+ toggle set to 4.0 or 4.3) and merges it into your prior cumulative. As a check on the A+ toggle: this term's A+ (4 credits), B (2 credits), and A (3 credits) come to a 3.78 term GPA with A+ capped at 4.0 and a 3.91 with A+ set to 4.3.
Combining several schools works the same way as combining terms — each school is one labelled row of GPA and GPA credit hours, which you will find on your unofficial transcript. Two cautions. First, credit hours must be on one consistent basis: this tool does not convert between quarter and semester credits, so combine only terms measured the same way. Second, in the course model, pass/no-pass, incomplete, and withdrawal grades (P, NP, I, W) carry credit toward completion but are excluded from the GPA math entirely, so they neither raise nor lower your number.
Is my cumulative GPA good?
Per College Board, the average GPA across all U.S. high schools is about 3.0 and across all U.S. colleges about 3.1. Read those as national averages, not pass/fail lines or admissions cutoffs — what counts as strong depends on your goals, your program, and your school's rigor. Cumulative GPA is the number graduate schools, transfer admissions offices, scholarships, and honors programs tend to read most closely, because it summarizes your whole record rather than a single strong or weak term, which is why it is worth computing it the credit-weighted way rather than eyeballing an average of your semesters.
